Amateur Radio Operator — Who, What & How?

What is Amateur Radio?

Amateur radio, also known as ham radio, is a hobby and service that allows people to communicate using radio frequencies without the need for cell phones or the internet. It can be used to talk across town, around the world, or even into space.

Who is an Amateur Radio Operator?

An amateur radio operator is someone who uses equipment at an amateur radio station to engage in two-way personal communications with other amateur operators on radio frequencies assigned to the amateur radio service.

How can an Amateur Radio Operator use radio equipment in Bangladesh? [Legalities]

A BTRC-licensed amateur radio operator in Bangladesh can use radio equipment in land, vehicles and maritime vessels by following these steps:

Obtain an Amateur Radio License:

  • Qualification: To operate amateur radio equipment legally, you must have a valid amateur radio license issued by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
  • Examination: You need to pass an examination that tests your knowledge of radio theory, regulations, and operating procedures.
  • Application: Submit an application to BTRC, along with necessary documents and fees. Details on application procedures can be found on the BTRC website or by contacting their office.

Call Sign:

  • Once you pass the exam and your application is approved, you will be issued a unique call sign. This call sign identifies you on the airwaves.

Equipment:

  • Purchase: Ensure you buy equipment that complies with local regulations. Popular brands include Baofeng, Yaesu, QYT, Icom, and Kenwood.
  • Setup: Set up your equipment in compliance with BTRC regulations. This may include specific antenna height restrictions and location guidelines.

Operating Procedures:

  • Familiarize yourself with the standard operating procedures, such as calling frequencies, how to initiate a contact, and emergency protocols.
  • Follow the technical standards and operating practices as specified by BTRC and international amateur radio guidelines.

Clubs and Associations:

  • Join local amateur radio clubs or associations, like the Bangladesh Amateur Radio League (BARL), Amateur Radio Society of Bangladesh (ARSB) and Amateur Radio Association Bangladesh (ARAB). They can provide support, resources, and community for new operators.

Compliance:

  • Ensure ongoing compliance with all BTRC regulations, including license renewals and any changes in regulations.
